7th First Citizens UWI Internship Journey Commences

A new group of talented and driven interns from the University of the West Indies (UWI) recently joined the First Citizens Group to obtain real-world work experience. Now in its 7th year, the programme’s reputation for delivering a quality experience continues to be cemented, with over one hundred students from across various Faculties, tossing their hats into the ring to interview for one of the limited internship spots.

At the Opening Ceremony held on June 1st 2023, Dr. Wayne Goodridge – Head of Department, Department of Computing and Information Technology (DCIT), cited from a statistics report prepared by UWI’s Quality Assurance Unit for the Faculty of Science and Technology, that 79% of DCIT students had gained employment within the first month. It was with this in mind that he urged the students to remember that they were planting a seed for the future at First Citizens.

Welcoming the 2023 interns to the Group was, Professor of Practice Dr. Sterling Frost O.R.T.T – Group Deputy CEO – Operations and Administration, First Citizens, who stated that this was not any mere internship programme but one with a vision of building citizens. With that in mind, he challenged the interns to “…grasp all that you can while you’re here and take personal responsibility for making the experience a worthwhile one!”

Each intern will benefit from a dynamic 10-week stint with the Group that began with them being welcomed by their individual departments and, as a result, immersed in the First Citizens family. Coming up is the “Intern Week”, during which they will take part in an onboarding session, additional developmental workshops, and engagement activities designed to further integrate them into the organization’s culture and provide a knowledge of the Group’s core values.

As it continues to demonstrate its commitment to youth development and education, First Citizens looks forward to another successful partnership with UWI, to provide these students with real world of work experience and challenging projects so that they can capitalize on an excellent talent development opportunity whilst growing into productive citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
